Emeralds are a member of the beryl family, same with amethysts. They come from green crystals which have grown slowly inside the metamorphic rocks. These rocks limit the expansion of the crystals, hence, these crystals harden and became very durable. In spite of this, the fractures and inclusions inside the emeralds render these stones less durable and more susceptible to breaking than diamonds that is why care must still be observed concerning these stones.
