Celebrating December Birthstones

The December birthstone is a dominant blue colored topaz. It has the same shade as that of a blue lake on a summer day. Though the word topaz came from the Sanskrit word “tapas” which means fire, topaz stones are said to have cooling properties and can help calm not just boiling waters but also a very hot temper. Aside from this, this stone is also associated with various healing abilities such as curing insanity, treating asthma, strengthening vision and alleviating insomnia. Alas, it could also render its wearer invisible during threatening situations.

Of all the silicate minerals, Blue Topaz is said to be the hardest one among its kind. Though initially colorless, Blue Topaz is formed when the colorless topaz is heated. Other colors of topaz can be produced from exposure to different elements, colors such as pale green, red, yellow or pink. As for the blue shade, it has three types which are Sky Blue, Swiss Blue and London Blue. The latter shade is often used as a less expensive substitute for Sapphire and is the deepest one.

Topaz is said to symbolize love and fidelity. It can be found in Brazil, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Pakistan, China, and the United States.

As for alternate December birthstones, there is a wide variety to choose from. One can select from Turquoise, Tanzanite, Zircon, Lapis and Onyx.

As with any other gem stones, care of Blue Topaz and Turquoise should be handled carefully. These stones are generally soft that is why it is important to protect them from hard blows and scratches. Exposure from harmful chemicals should be avoided so as to preserve the minerals’ shine and radiance.
