As with most items you purchase, there is often difference between cost and value. When comparing pieces of discount silver jewelry, examine the quality of craftsmanship before making a purchase based on just the price alone.
§ Jewelry is meant to last, so be certain you are getting a product of good value for your money. If your jewelry only lasts for a few wearings, it is quite disappointing! Things to examine include:
§ Workmanship: Is the clasp of good quality? Does it fasten securely like it is supposed to? For chains, try to run it lightly along some loose fabric to find out if the chain segments are secure and tight, not snagging the fabric.
§ Metal content: Look for the silver alloy marking. (Usually, it is by the clasp, inside a ring, or behind a pendant.) Does the silver have a 925 stamp to ensure it is sterling or a 999 stamp showing it is fine silver? If there is no stamp, it is most likely not sterling or fine silver.
§ Tarnishing: Has the retailer kept the silver jewelry stored correctly to lessen tarnishing? Has any tarnishing been polished away so the silver is as bright as possible?
§ Gemstones: Check that the gems set securely. Is there some paperwork signed by a certified gemologist indicating the quality of the stone, especially color, cut, clarity and karat weight for diamonds?
Of course, with really discount silver bracelets or bargain silver earrings it doesn’t matter quite as much — but it is still possible to get fantastic jewelry at a terrific price!
