Mother’s day is celebrated throughout the world, though not always on the same date. According to Wikipedia, Mother’s day in 2009 is primarily celebrated on May 10th (the largest number of countries including the United States, Canada, and Mexico) but it is also celebrated many other days as well. In England, it was celebrated March 22nd. If you find that you missed the official date, perhaps you can say you were just celebrating it from another country!
When Mother’s Day Began
Mother’s Day is relatively new in the United States, beginning primarily in 1912. In the United Kingdom it started in the 16th century. It is not meant to be a commercial holiday – but as schedules have gotten tighter and people want to give nice gifts, people buy fancier gifts and cards to make up for the time they don’t have.
Mother’s Day’s Gifts
Traditionally, white carnations were given for Mother’s Day. However, This has evolved into much more. Some people are allergic to flowers; others prefer a gift that lasts longer. Often a visit or handmade gift means more if one has the time. Yet, usually, Mother’s day gifts are appreciated no matter what you get.
Gifts for Mom
We tend to recommend jewelry as gifts for many reasons:
* Fun gift. Seems that most people just find jewelry fun. It is sought after and enjoyed.
* Jewelry lasts. This means your gifts will last longer than roses or chocolates.
* Personal gift to remember. Jewelry gets worn and seen and is not essential. As such, it often is appreciated more as it is special
* Less allergies. Allergies to jewelry are more rare than to foods – especially if you avoid nickel jewelry. If allergies are a concern, read avoid earring allergies.
However, whatever gift you pick, choose it with love and give it with love. That is what gift giving is all about!
