The month of October is host to one of the most colorful and shimmery known stones—the stone Opal. This stone treats its owner or wearer to a blast of colorful and sparkly lights due to its capability to replicate the specific wavelengths of light that is not very unlike that of the rainbow’s. This alone will surely captivate anyone who will be exposed to its beauty.

This October birthstone got its name from the Latin word “opalus” which means precious jewel. It is also sometimes called “Cupid Paederos” by the Romans which means a child as beautiful as love. Some folklore legends even went as far as stating that its origin can not be questioned for it has fallen from heaven though a fiery lightning.

Aside from opal, tourmaline is also associated with the month of October. It is said that tourmaline is the traditional birthstone for October. While Opal is usually in black or white with several sparkling colors of light, tourmaline can be found in a variety of colors, though it is more often colored green or pink.

For their care, both opals and tourmaline need to be protected from scratches and hard blows since both are relatively soft and can be broken easily. These October birthstones contain a portion of water that is why it is imperative to protect them from harmful chemicals.

Opals are usually found in South Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Czechoslovakia and Nevada. Tourmaline, on the other hand, can be found in Brazil, Afghanistan, India and Burma. Opals signify confidence, beauty and happiness, while tourmalines protect the wearer.
