There are a several kinds of red gems in the world and here are some of the most popular and frequently admired.

Ruby

For centuries now, the ruby gem stone has been considered one among the most precious gemstones on earth. Ruby comes from the word “rubens”, the Latin name for red. It is the birthstone for people born in the month of July. It manifests every characteristic that a precious gem stone should have; an excellent hardness, a magnificent color and an outstanding brilliance. Additionally, this red gemstone is especially rare, let alone its finer qualities. Ruby is thought to be the red variety of mineral corundum; it’s one of the hardest mineral found on earth. A pure corundum has no color. Some colored corundum is influenced by traces of iron, chrome, vanadium and titanium is small amounts. These gemstones have an exceptional hardness. The red corundum is called ruby and all the rest are called sapphires. Some rubies have a brilliant silky shine display called the “silk of ruby”. This silky display is caused by the fine needles of the rutile, which gives the ruby some star-shaped deposits responsible for the light and silky effect; experts called it aterism. The reddish color of ruby is comparable to fiery and warm. This red gemstone is the perfect gem to express your powerful feelings. A ruby ring symbolizes passion and love.

Rubellite Tourmaline

Rubellite is a beautiful and sparkling red gemstone that comes from the brilliant tourmalines family. Its color radiates from red to shocking pink. The tourmaline family is a group of related gemstones created by nature in various colors. The variations of this gemstone are classified according to the colorname attached to the word “tourmaline”. The rubellite is however, an exception to the rule, though it is sometimes called red tourmaline. The word “rubellites” is derived from the Latin “rubellus”, meaning reddish. Rubellites are not purely red tourmalines. This is because of the way that the color behaves when it’s under artificial light or daylight. Some tourmaline gems change its color on different source of light. A true rubellite does not change its color no matter what the light source is. This kind of gemstone is mostly found in Madagascar, Nigeria, Brazil and Pakistan.

Spinel

The red spinel is thought be the greatest impostor in the history of gemstones. The truth is, some ruby crown jewels are actually made of spinels. This gemstone is the favorite of most gem collectors and dealers. This is because of its brialliant red color and the hardness of the stone. Spinels are mostly made in laboratories and are often used to imitate birthstone rings such as ruby. A lot of people associates the word “synthetic” to spinel. Every so often, these people have not yet seen the real one. The main reason why spinel never achieves glory is because of its rarity. In fact, the finer spinels are even rarer than the rubies they imitate. It is a durable stone that’s perfect for jewelries and it’s more affordable too as compared to real rubies.
